The Pleiades

"Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:"

Amos 5:8 KJV

Also known as Messier 45, this bright cluster of stars can be seen in the northern hemisphere raising in the fall. This object is comprised entirely of dust that is reflecting the bright blue of light of the surrounding stars.

This specific image as a contains some special guests. The two little steaks just below and around Atlas and Pleione (the two brightest stars on the bottom) are asteroids discovered early in the 20th century: 793 Arizona (the faint one) and 796 Sarita (the bright one). If you look close enough, you’ll see a second streak a little farther to the lower right. Since the data for the image was taken on two different nights, you can make out the path of movement of the brighter one over a couple of days.
