A Mineral Moon

"Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?"

Song of Solomon 6:10 KJV

Although it may not be as spectacular as other photos featured on our site, the Moon has some features that can be showcased in an amazing way with the right techniques. The lunar surface is composed of minerals that give it a variety of colors. These often go unseen in pictures of the Moon with a careful enhancement of the saturation. The blue spots represent titanium, and the brown areas are primarily iron. None of these colors were added to the image. Instead, the saturation was slowly increased until it became visible over the natural brightness of the Moon.
